The Reassurance Cost Calculator

If you have found yourself asking again — asking the same person the same question, checking the same body sensation, rereading the same email, googling the same symptom — and the relief that follows never quite lasts, and each time the doubt returns it seems to bring a slightly new detail with it, this workbook was written for you. The problem is not that you need reassurance. It is that reassurance has quietly become the trade you are making with your anxiety — and the price is climbing.

Reassurance often feels like a sensible response to anxiety. If something feels uncertain, alarming, or unresolved, asking, checking, reviewing, or getting someone to confirm that things are okay can seem like the obvious thing to do. And in the moment, reassurance usually works — the body softens a little, the mind settles briefly, the pressure drops. That short-term easing is exactly why reassurance becomes so sticky. The problem is not that it never works. The problem is that it works just enough, and not for long enough.
Over time, the brain does not learn "I am safe." It learns "I needed reassurance in order to feel safe." That is a very different lesson — and it keeps the whole cycle running.
This workbook does not ask you to stop wanting reassurance. It teaches you to see the full trade you are making — the short-term relief AND the long-term cost — so you can respond with more choice and less automaticity.

WHAT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO DO BY THE END
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
✦ Recognise reassurance-seeking as a maintenance pattern, not a solution — even when it feels like the sensible response
✦ Map the seven-stage reassurance loop (trigger → doubt → body → urge → move → easing → return) as it plays out in your specific life
✦ See the full cost of each check, ask, or Google — not just the first five minutes of relief
✦ Use structured techniques from CBT and ERP to sit with uncertainty rather than needing to resolve it immediately
✦ Carry a "micro-version" of the technique with you for the moment the urge appears
✦ Build your own personal interruption plan for reassurance-seeking — without shame, and without needing to be a different person to use it

The goal is not to stop wanting reassurance overnight. It is to see the full trade — clearly enough that you can choose differently, one check at a time.
